Frequently Asked Questions

How is F&O margin calculated?
F&O margin = SPAN + Exposure margin. SPAN is risk-based (set by NSE daily). Exposure is additional collateral (3-5% for indices, higher for stocks). Option buyers pay only premium. Option sellers need full margin.
What is STT on F&O?
Options: 0.0625% on premium (sell side). Futures: 0.0125% on sell side. ITM exercise: 0.125% on intrinsic value — 10x higher, which is why traders square off before expiry.
Which broker is cheapest for F&O?
Most discount brokers charge ₹20/order flat. The real cost difference is in margins and platform. Compare total cost including STT, stamp duty, GST — not just brokerage.
What is Bank Nifty lot size?
Bank Nifty: 15 units. Nifty: 25. FinNifty: 25. MidcpNifty: 50. Sensex: 10. Lot sizes are set by NSE and revised periodically.
Why is STT on exercised options so high?
STT on exercise is 0.125% on intrinsic value (not premium). Deep ITM positions can incur hundreds of rupees in STT. Always square off ITM positions before 3:25 PM on expiry day.
